Consisting chiefly of letters to Ward's girlfriend, Elizabeth [Bettie] Floyd; also including several letters to Bettie from cousins John Frank Floyd and David S. Floyd; topics include Ward's longing to return home, hopes for victory, and complaints of food, superiors, and other matters, during campaigns in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. Items of interest include letter, Jan. 1862, expressing interest in volunteering to sail to Europe to outfit gunboats for the Confederacy; letter, 1 Nov. 1862, discussing possible recognition of the Confederate government by Britain; 3 letters, 28 June-2 Aug. 1864, describing the bombardment of Charleston and Ft. Sumter; and letter, 13 Mar. 1865, re Wade Hampton's location in North Carolina in the wake of Sherman's advancing army.
